Recording audio with your video DSLR, Part I By... →
Here is a link to new piece by Juan Pons on audio with more to come. It gives an indication of the extra effort that is required to get good sound although there are a few different options.
Incidentally at the end of this month my wife and myself were going to be joining Juan for a Yellowstone in Winter workshop. As it turned out my mothers illness meant we had to pull out and Juan was very...

TEKNOTE Using video on a DSLR
Here are some first thoughts for beginners on using a DSLR’s video functions.
Forget panning and zooming unless you are fully geared up. Heavy DSLRs wobble when hand held and zooming is jerky when you are forced to turn the lens itself. (Serious users get around this with platform mounts, shoulder mounts and gear systems, which seem to work well but seriously pimp up the camera. Lots of extra...

REFLECTION on still vs video and nature imagery
Making successful images of animals and birds turns out to be much harder than I realised at first. Getting a good big lens helps but doesn’t ensure success. I am sure patience would help too, but I haven’t really tried that yet.

REFLECTION on despair as a photographer
I am in the midst of my usual depression where I look at the raw files I bring back from a trip and just feel dreadful. At this point friends are quick to reassure me, which is rarely any solace as I still see what I see in my images; there is always too much truth in what I see...

Click through to Vimeo for a bigger HD version or to my site here for a truly big HD version (if you can spare the bandwidth)
Video recorded on Salisbury Plains in South Georgia using Canon 7D with external Rode microphone. I will write soon about video vs still photography in portraying nature.

a little folly to start the penguin week…..
Young king penguins are called ‘oakum boys’ after their resemblance to the tar and rope covered young sailors who caulked the wooden ships. Others think of them as walking kiwi fruit. The fluffy feathers are not waterproof so they are left in creches, hanging out till they are properly feathered and can swim.
here i am encountered by...

REBLOG:Latest research: Psychodynamic... →
psychotherapy:
Ah, sweet vindication! As a practitioner of (and strong believer in) psychodynamic therapy, I have to say, this is enormously exciting news. While we have long believed this to be true in our heart of hearts, it hasn’t always been so easy to prove empirically. But now? Read it and weep, Pfizer:
A new study finds psychodynamic psychotherapy is an effective intervention with...
