the realities of war -‘I took some flesh home and called it my son.’ The Guardian interviews 11 villagers

When I worked with veterans I was struck most by two things:

• the immense decency and desire to contribute positively present in nearly all soldiers (now veterans) that I met and

• the way war means so much associated trauma to the ‘involved and uninvolved’ of a kind and breadth not much understood nor portrayed in movies, war fiction or the media.
