BH11 11  A week of forest images from the hike up to Bumdra. Sometimes I think in terms of ‘seeing the forest for the trees’ bits of trees gives more of a feeling than the whole. So here are some detail images.

BH11 09 Since this week seems to have a people sub theme here are two of the intrepid expedition members ‘roughing it’ on our recent Bhutan Photo Tour. We travel in individual four wheel drives with two photographers, a guide and a driver to each car. That way we can stop where we see a photo opportunity along the way. Namgay our local tour manager has organised chairs and a thermos flask so we can stop for morning tea as well when we are on the road. We sure had some great weather this trip. Planning two groups for next October & November 2012 now that we are back. Here is a link to register your interest.

BH11 08 what I think of as the ‘classic running monk shot’ because it’s something photographers love to capture. At least i didn’t ask the young monk to run. It was raining.

BH11 07 a series at the archery: draw, ‘loose’, watch  The weekend archery at Thimphu. Archery is the national sport and while  compound bows are popular, there are traditional bow competitions as well. I did try pulling one of these bows and can report I would be lucky to draw back one inch on one like this. I also could barely see the target 120 metres away. info here

BH11 06 Young monks last Sunday near Thimphu, enthusiastically playing a serious game of darts, watch their friend’s dart head towards the target as they prepare for their own turn.

BH11 04 One of the few remaining traditional shops in the Bhutan’s capital Thimphu which I will leave today. The capitals population has more than doubled in the last decade. It’s been interesting to move about Thimphu without the responsibilities of a tour for a few days, take time for my own images and think through options for future expeditions.

BH11 02  One flies into Bhutan via Druk Air and its highly trained pilots who manage the high altitude landing skilfully. The plane negotiates the valleys on its approach, after passing Mt Everest a little earlier. This image made from the top of the Paro Dzong where I was lucky enough to be at the right time and place.

BH11 01  Starting a new Bhutan series today with the classic view of Taktshang Gompa (Tigers Nest) looking wonderful in the afternoon sun. I am still in Bhutan for a few more days after my wife and I led our first photography expedition here. Our group approached Taktshang in two different ways. Half via the classic route and its 800 steps and the other half descending 1200 metres through scattered snow after camping overnight at 3800M at Bumdra.
